It is really good to have a humidifier in your house; especially when the house is too dry and some of your family members have respiratory problems. First is the actual humidity of the space that you want to position your humidifier.
What you need is a good and stable humidity; not too high or too low. Use a hygrometer to test the level of humidity. Some humidifier actually has a built in hygrometer or humidistat and you should consider buying the models that have those. Secondly, you must clean your humidifier often.
When you replace the water in the reservoir make sure you clean it properly first. Use distilled water or water without mineral. Clean the filter at least three times a week and replace old humidifier if it impossible to clean it anymore. Now you can use your humidifier more effectively.
